‘Giant’ eagle at the end of life – AP

A giant eagle has been seen perched at the edge of a funeral home in southern France, after the owner said the animal was “too big to walk” during its final days.

The eagle, which weighed more than 200 kilograms (330 pounds), was spotted by a worker at the funeral home on the outskirts of Bordeaux, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Paris.

“The bird has reached the end,” said Vincent de Villiers, the owner of the funeral parlour, which is one of only a few in France with a wingspan of more than 150 metres (400 feet).

“The owner wants to give it to the children of the community and send it off in the sky, because there’s no one left for him to be with.”

The eagle has a wingspread of about 200 metres (500 feet), but it is not expected to fly again until the end.
